Fat Transfer VS Dermal Filler to Lips

Most temporary dermal fillers are based on hyaluronic acid which is a substance found in our skin and body however the fillers used are synthetic and there are patients who don’t necessarily want to try dermal fillers because they are a synthetic substance.

Fat transfer uses the patient’s own fat harvested from the abdomen, hips, thighs or anywhere where there is fat in the body. Only a couple of hundred ml’s is required so it won’t really make a difference in the size of the area where the fat is taken from.

Fat Transfer is a very natural way of creating volume to an area. The choice for some patients is to go for a more natural procedure using our own body’s fat rather than dermal fillers.

Because Fat transfer requires mini liposuction it is a bit more of an invasive procedure. Not everyone can have the downtime required and discomfort. Local anaesthetic is required during fat transfer as it is a bit more uncomfortable than having dermal fillers.

Dermal Fillers can be performed a lot quicker and easier than fat transfer so many patient choose dermal fillers due to convenience.

Fat Transfer is not reversible. If a patient doesn’t like the outcome of the procedure, the fat isn’t easily removed. Dermal Fillers however are easily removed by injecting an enzyme called Hyaluronidase which dissolves the filler usually within 24 hours. The reassurance that dermal fillers can be easily reversed may be appealing to some patients.

Dermal filler is thicker in consistency therefore is really great to create shape. Fat on the other hand is a lot smoother in texture and really will only create volume.

Fat Transfer will suit patients who have more of a generalised volume loss rather than those wanting to create more of a shape to their lips where then dermal filler will be the better option.

Our injectors don’t favour one or the other it’s more choosing the correct procedure for each patient and in many cases this is a combination of both dermal filler and fat transfer. This may be starting off with dermal filler to create the perfect lip shape then going in with fat transfer for added longer lasting volume.

Our injectors have many years of experience performing both of these procedures and their artistic yet subtle approach ensures natural looking results which continues to exceed our patient’s expectations.
